Hip Rotation in the Golf Swing

by Rick Hendershot

There are almost as many theories about the golf swing as there are instructors. And one of the least understood aspects of the swing is the rotation of the hips to an "open" position just before impact.

Most contemporary golf instructors believe it is necessary to "clear your hips just before the point of impact" in order to get your hips out of the way of your hands. According to this theory, if you don't "clear your hips" your hands and arms will be impeded and will not be able to attack the ball with power.

This is sometimes used as an explanation for why an overly "vertical" stance is not a good thing. According to this line of thinking, when you stand too close to the ball your hands will not be able to make a clean pass in front of your body because on the way down your hips will get in the way.

My last round of the year?

Last Sunday (Nov 12) Fritz and I headed over to Rattlesnake Point for what could easily turn out to be the last round of the year. It had been an unseasonably warm weekend, and in spite of threatening rain and just slightly colder temperatures, it was still a very nice day for golf.

For the second Sunday in a row the wind was howling. The previous week flag poles were blowing right out of their snug positions in the holes and at times you could hardly walk against the wind. I don't think I had played in winds that strong, even in Ireland or Scotland. The closest I can remember was a round we played at Dunaverty at the extreme end of the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland.

Scotty Cameron on Putting

I generally think elaborate putter design is a crock, and am predisposed to think Scotty Cameron is just cashing in on the ridiculous insecurities of golfers. The article in the January, 2006 issue of Golf Digest ("Scotty Cameron") does not completely change my opinion, but at least it associates a face and some interesting ideas with the overpriced putters that bear his name.

SMT revamp web site, add Canadian distributors

SMT have done a good job of revamping the SMT website.

Commenting on a recent long drive championship win, SMT president, Mike Tait said, "The 455 continues to be our number one seller," said Mike Tait, President of SMT Golf. "It's the driver that put SMT on the map back in 2002, and is still the number one choice of Long Drive competitors all over the world. This marks its 30th Victory on the Long Drive Circuit in just 4 years. I've got a pretty good hunch it's going to make it to 50 before all is said and done."

SMT has added a couple Canadian distributors. The full list is now:

- Cosmo Golf, 1302B Alberta Ave., Sask. 306-667-3027
- Golf en tete, 5525 Auteuil Brossard, Quebec 866-629-3300
- Rama Custom Golf, 97 Somerglen Park, Calgary AB 403-201-9788

First SMT irons assembled

The new irons from SMT are exactly what I have been looking for, and I've been putting off building a set until this winter. But Andy (my son) is trying to switch to right from left (for a variety of reasons), and has been hacking at the range with an old set of mine that don't add to his chances of making the transition.

So I convinced him to get a few samples of the SMT 303MB -- a muscle back blade. This is a fairly new head and he had a bit of trouble getting exactly what he wanted, but settled for a 7,6,5. I put them together last night with Harrison Premier Lite 85 shafts and Winn midsize grips.

Nice looking clubs.

Ah to be Young Again

Today Fritz and I played a round with a fellow named Steve and his son Andrew. Andrew was just going into grade 6, so that makes him about 11, two years older than my oldest grandson Alex.

Most young golfers I've played with are surprisingly polite, and quite aware of the rules of golf etiquette. But they often reflect the stern and business-like attitude ingrained in them by several years of serious coaching. They often have beautiful swings, and effortless short game instincts -- the result of extensive coaching, lots of playing, and the control over their bodies that only young people have. But usually they lack a sense of humour and what one might call a "playful" attitude towards the game. I assume this is part of the training involved in becoming a life-long over-achiever.

Andrew was not old enough yet to be totally immersed in himself. He had impressive skills for a young golfer, but lacked the sense of self-importance that much-coached young up and comers often have. I'm sure if he keeps at it that will come too. But for now golf is more fun than work, more a game than a vocation. He even laughed at some of our jokes.

And for an 11 year old, he could sure hit it a ton.

What do Trees have to do with Golf?

On our way back from a recent round of golf, Fritz and I were discussing the way most golfers evaluate golf courses. We've had this discussion before, and it inevitably gets around to my heartfelt conviction that trees do not enhance the "golfing experience".

Most golfers in North America assume that golf is not golf without tree-lined fairways. If I am not mistaken, this is a bias created by a century of golf course design compliments of a relatively small number of trend-setting designers. In Canada, Stanley Thompson was the main man. His course designs can be found across the country, and inevitably they feature lush green (soft) fairways lined with majestic trees.

Rules are just soooo important

The recent Michelle Wie incident raises some interesting questions which are bound to get the self-righteous among us huffing and puffing that "rules are rules". In case you are not aware, this is the incident in which she was -- after the fact -- disqualified from a tournament in which she placed 4th, for dropping her ball "closer to the hole".

A reporter for Sports Illustrated calls in the day after the incident took place and says "I was there and I think her drop was closer to the hole." Apparently he has a magic triangulation system that is able to determine a difference of 18". What? You don't think this is an exact science?

We Visit the Lake Joseph Club

Last weekend Judy and I headed up to the Muskoka area of Ontario for a couple of days away from the normal routine. We make a similar trip almost every year because our wedding anniversary falls around the second weekend of September -- roughly a week after Labour Day.

This year we stayed at the Sleep Inn in Bracebridge and played a couple of rounds at the Lake Joseph Club. Lake Joseph doesn't get the same glowing press as its brother down the road - Rocky Crest - but in my mind is a more interesting and "friendlier" course to play. Many of the holes have elevated tees and the fairways are sculpted so you can easily visualize the way you want your shots to run.

Old Fix Cures Driver Swing

Something was up with my driver swing this weekend. Friday we were out at Glen Abbey and I just did not have the same old power with Big Red that I've had for the last few months. I figured it was partially that I had started on some new medication last week and it was having an effect by Friday. The other guys in my group were routinely blowing it by me.

So I went with my better instincts and stopped taking the new drugs. I also took a half hour or so on the range on Saturday to experiment with my driver swing. I usually go back to one of two or three quick fixes to try to restore my swing to health.

Almost time to clear out the basement

Last winter was one of my more productive times from the perspective of swing analysis and practice. My basement "range" consists of a canvas tarp folded up several times and hung over a bench. I can hit anything between about a 5 iron to driver into the tarp. But only with half swings -- otherwise the club head hits the ceiling .

As the season winds down I'm looking forward to more of the old half swing drills I was working on last year. Really didn't get much time to practice this season, so a bit of time at "the range" will be a pleasant change.

Mar 7, 2006 - Linknet Entertainment - The next time you go on an extended golf excursion, make sure to take your chess set and board along with you.

Travel Chess Set

Pegged and Magnetic chess sets have come a long way over the last few years. Recall those sets that were supposed to be magnetic but kept falling off ruining the game? Not so with these specially sourced travel chess sets made available through the chess Baron.

You can turn the board upside down, shake it, and the pieces will not move - turn the board back up the right way and continue the game! Or play upside down if you prefer. The peg chess sets are superb in detail - no problem telling apart the bishops and the pawns.
