According to a study by Indiana University Medical Center in Indianapolis and published in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine over half, or 53 percent, of teen boys, say they don't always use a condom. Among girls, about two-thirds say a condom isn't always used.

The study focuses only on sexually active teens, identified as teens who have had sex in the past three months.

The study's authors speculated that condom usage may decrease as teen relationships become more settled between a couple, and teens do less "sleeping around".

The study also found that as many as 41% of girls between 14 and 17 who visited urban health clinics in Indianapolis said they'd had unwanted sex at some point. The most common reason was fear that their boyfriend would become angry. 10% said they were forced to have sex when they didn't want to.

Is Cancer Being Cured by Research?

by Rick Hendershot, Beat Prostate Cancer - For the last couple of years at this time of the year I've managed to get into at least one very emotional argument about the objectives and success rate -- or lack-of-success rate -- of cancer research.

The reason is that this weekend marks the end of Terry Fox's "Marathon of Hope" that took place in 1980. Terry was the young Canadian who after having his leg amputated because of cancer decided he would run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.

After 142 days of running 26 miles a day (a marathon a day), and after 3339 miles, Terry had to end his run near the city of Thunder Bay, Ontario on September 1, 1980. His cancer had returned, and this time it was in his lungs.

Can Eating Certain Foods Help You to Lose Weight?

The best way to lose weight is by consuming fewer calories than you expend or conversely, by expending more calories than you consume.

Experts have discovered that certain foods can actually help you to lose weight without the stress of dieting or exercise. The down side is that many of us have a tendency to dress these foods up with cheese, sour cream, butter or other calorie-laden flavor enhancers. This causes the weight loss effect to be lost. It may be difficult to not add extra calories to these foods but with a strong will power it can be done.

No More Cholesterol Pills?

Sept 6, 2005 - Linknet Health News - Study Shows Red Wine Molecule Prevents Plaque From Forming In Arteries Regardless of Cholesterol Count - From Young Again - For over a decade researchers have debated whether red wine produces health benefits because of its alcohol content, or because of other molecules in red wine. Now researchers at Nanjing Medical University in China report on the use of de-alcoholized red wine and cardiovascular health. Animals were fed alcohol, red wine, de-alcoholized red wine and pure research-grade resveratrol, a molecule found in red wine. Animals were then fed a high cholesterol diet and the human equivalent of 210 milligrams of resveratrol, or 280 millilters of red wine or alcohol-free red wine.

The results of the study are surprising. After 12 weeks the animals actually experienced a rise in circulating levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and "good" HDL cholesterol regardless of whether they were fed alcohol, red wine, alcohol-free red wine or resveratrol.

However, while cholesterol plaque formed in the arteries (thoracic aorta) of the cholesterol-fed animals, the size, density, and mean area of atherosclerotic plaques were significantly reduced in rabbits given de-alcoholized red wine, red wine, or resveratrol.

Resveratrol prevents cholesterol plaque from forming within artery wall regardless of whether circulating levels of cholesterol are high or low!

Vitamin D helps fight cancer, report claims

Dec 30, 2005 - from Linknet-News.com - A research team from the San Diego Moores Cancer Center headed up by Dr. Cedric Garland recently concluded that Vitamin D deficiency is often associated with various types of cancer. "Our suggestion is for for people to increase their intake," through diet or a vitamin supplement, Dr. Cedric Garland said in a telephone interview.

The research team reviewed 63 studies conducted between 1966 and 2004 on the relationship between vitamin D and certain types of cancer. The report concluded that Vitamin D deficiency was a factor in several thousand deaths due to colon, breast, ovarian and other cancers every year.

The report recommended increasing Vitamin D intake, either in the form of supplements or by eating certain foods such as fortified orange juice, yogurt and cheeses. This is especially the case with people in northern latitudes where there is less exposure to the sun. African Americans are also more prone to a Vitamin D deficiency because the their skin pigment reduces the amount produced by the body.

Observers welcomed the University of California study but also warned that kidney and liver damage could result from too much vitamin D.

The "natural" form of the vitamin, called D3, is normally produced in the skin after exposure to sunlight, but is also obtained from certain foods such as oily fish, margarine and meat.

HIV-Positive Delegates to Toronto Conference File for Refugee Status - After the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto last month about 160 hiv-positive delegates have made refugee claims to stay in the country.

Canada's refugee laws have been known in the past to be quite lenient, but as things stand now, the country rejects immigration applications from people who have no grounds other than that the country they are from is too poor to provide adequate health care or drugs. This is generally the case with many countries where hiv/aids is a major problem.

Refugee claims have been filed by delegates from El Salvador, Eritrea, Peru, South Africa, Uganda and other countries.

Washington HIV Problems Worse Because Condoms are Hard to Get

Apr 13, 2006 - Linknet Health News - Health officials in the Washington D.C. area say that by locking up condoms so customers have to ask for them, drugs stores are harming the fight against HIV/AIDS.

== Forget about drugstores - Get UK Condoms Online ==

The CSV chain of drugstores had the highest proportion of locked-up condoms -- 22 out of 50 stores -- and most in poorer areas. Officials say there is a higher incidence of HIV/AIDS in these poorer areas, and making condoms more difficult to get just adds to the problem.

At the same time, conservative and religious groups think barriers to condom purchase are a good thing. The Citizens for Community Values is in favor of the restrictions, and would like them to be even more stringent.

The HIV rate in the Washington district is 10 times the national average, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Estimates are that 5% of the district's 500,000 residents are HIV-positive, and about 2% have been diagnosed with AIDS.
