[...] Read more! Moe Norman feature in Ontario Golf There is a very good feature on the late Moe Norman in the current issue of Ontario Golf. "The Greatest Stories Never Told" features some of the Moe Norman stories you are not likely to hear in the usual places.
Having spent my entire golfing life (10 years and counting) in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario (Moe's home town) it is hard not to have bumped into him here and there around town. Moe was almost always in all the places you would expect you might see him -- at Rockway, at the Dome, at the "Aud". It's wierd. You go to these places once every three years or so and there's Moe.

The Morris Men is a great new book by Stepehen E. Mitchell, a relatively new author who has combined his love of antique golf clubs with a passion for writing. The rather unlikely sounding plot goes something like this...
Two well-to-do English families find themselves caught up in a wager made almost 80 years prior by the patriarchs of the two families. Although members of the same golf club, the two old gentlemen seem to have hated each other.

First SMT irons assembled The new irons from SMT are exactly what I have been looking for, and I've been putting off building a set until this winter. But Andy (my son) is trying to switch to right from left (for a variety of reasons), and has been hacking at the range with an old set of mine that don't add to his chances of making the transition.
So I convinced him to get a few samples of the SMT 303MB -- a muscle back blade. This is a fairly new head and he had a bit of trouble getting exactly what he wanted, but settled for a 7,6,5. I put them together last night with Harrison Premier Lite 85 shafts and Winn midsize grips.
Nice looking clubs.

Gap and Other Wedges Our normal Saturday morning round this week featured a heated discussion about the "standard" lie of wedges, and, in particular what niche the "gap" wedge occupies in a) contemporary sets and b) traditional sets of clubs. I had previously suggested that the "gap" wedge occupies the territory between the 9 iron and the pitching wedge. Sean and Fritz ganged up on me insisting that it is between the PW and SW.
After a bit of research, it turns out that I was quite wrong and they were right -- although not without a (fairly extensive) caveat thrown in for good measure.

As usual on Thursday nights, the course was almost deserted. It had threatened rain most of the day, but turned into a really pleasant evening.
Unfortunately the stiff neck that I have been suffering from for most of the summer hit me with a vengeance, and I must have really aggravated it by playing. By Friday morning I could hardly move my head.

What do Trees have to do with Golf? On our way back from a recent round of golf, Fritz and I were discussing the way most golfers evaluate golf courses. We've had this discussion before, and it inevitably gets around to my heartfelt conviction that trees do not enhance the "golfing experience".
Most golfers in North America assume that golf is not golf without tree-lined fairways. If I am not mistaken, this is a bias created by a century of golf course design compliments of a relatively small number of trend-setting designers. In Canada, Stanley Thompson was the main man. His course designs can be found across the country, and inevitably they feature lush green (soft) fairways lined with majestic trees.

Interesting Back Nine at Grey Silo in Waterloo Earlier this week Judy wanted to play a bit of golf, so after checking out the options I suggested we try Grey Silo in Waterloo for a quick nine after six. Since Grey Silo is just about two miles down the road from our house, we were able to get there by about 5:45.
The clubhouse was pretty busy with the aftermath of a tournament, but the course was pretty quiet, so we headed out for a pleasant "walk in the park". Grey Silo really is a park like setting. The cart paths double as walking paths, bike paths and roller blade tracks. They are part of the "Grand River Trail", and this night, since the weather was perfect, there was a steady trickle of people using the trail.

Pegged and Magnetic chess sets have come a long way over the last few years. Recall those sets that were supposed to be magnetic but kept falling off ruining the game? Not so with these specially sourced travel chess sets made available through the chess Baron.
You can turn the board upside down, shake it, and the pieces will not move - turn the board back up the right way and continue the game! Or play upside down if you prefer. The peg chess sets are superb in detail - no problem telling apart the bishops and the pawns.

My basement "range" consists of a canvas tarp folded up several times and hung over a bench. I can hit anything between about a 5 iron to driver into the tarp. But only with half swings -- otherwise the club head hits the ceiling .
As the season winds down I'm looking forward to more of the old half swing drills I was working on last year. Really didn't get much time to practice this season, so a bit of time at "the range" will be a pleasant change.

Rules are just soooo important The recent Michelle Wie incident raises some interesting questions which are bound to get the self-righteous among us huffing and puffing that "rules are rules". In case you are not aware, this is the incident in which she was -- after the fact -- disqualified from a tournament in which she placed 4th, for dropping her ball "closer to the hole".
A reporter for Sports Illustrated calls in the day after the incident took place and says "I was there and I think her drop was closer to the hole." Apparently he has a magic triangulation system that is able to determine a difference of 18". What? You don't think this is an exact science?

Scotty Cameron on Putting I generally think elaborate putter design is a crock, and am predisposed to think Scotty Cameron is just cashing in on the ridiculous insecurities of golfers. The article in the January, 2006 issue of Golf Digest ("Scotty Cameron") does not completely change my opinion, but at least it associates a face and some interesting ideas with the overpriced putters that bear his name.

The word is the course is going to close early this year (Oct 30) so they can completely replace a number of the greens.
